City of Spoleto

Spoleto is located at the southern end of the Valle Umbra, a vast alluvial plain created in prehistoric times by the presence of a vast lake. The town developed on the hill Sant’Elia, a low hilly promontory at the foot of Monteluco and further down to the river Tessino.

For the beauty of its streets it has often been used as cinematographic location. Recently it has been used as location for the famous Italian TV-series Don Matteo.

Theatre city

Spoleto is a “theatre city”, a place open to all forms of artistic expression in where piazzas, theatres and buildings come to life in their beauty thanks to the many events organized here during the year.

Thanks to the richness of its artistic heritage and disposal of theatres, in 1958 Spoleto was chosen by the master Gian Carlo Menotti to host his Festival of Two Worlds: an extraordinary event that innovatively aims at giving voice to all forms of artistic expression, from theatre to dance, from classical to contemporary music, passing through cinema and science. The Festival of Two Worlds, which has been for many years a unique event in Italy, has always featured the greatest names from the international artistic panorama and has attracted visitors from all over the world. Nowadays the Festival still proposes works by prestigious directors, choreographers, scenographers and performers combining the great artistic tradition with the most interesting avant-garde.

Besides the Festival of Two Worlds, Spoleto offers a wide range of important events, including the plays brought up by the opera season at the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale A. Belli, the studying week organized by the Centro Studi sull’Alto Medioevo, the International Dance Week, a competition for young talents from all over the world, Wines in the World, a wine tasting event featuring shows and concerts in every corner of the city, La MaMa Spoleto Open, the summer fringe event with many interesting initiatives and Spoleto a Colori,  during which the city comes to life with music, dance and street artists.
